AGA Guide

AGA medicine side effects and precautions

Review important safety questions before starting finasteride, dutasteride, or minoxidil.

Discuss medicines with a physician

AGA medicines can be helpful for selected patients, but they are not simple cosmetics. Before starting, tell the doctor about liver disease, heart disease, low blood pressure, prostate testing, fertility concerns, pregnancy plans in the household, and all medicines or supplements you use.

Finasteride and dutasteride

Finasteride and dutasteride may cause sexual side effects, breast tenderness, mood changes, or other symptoms in some people. They can also affect PSA interpretation used in prostate screening. Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets of these medicines.

Minoxidil

Topical minoxidil may cause scalp irritation, itching, or unwanted hair growth on nearby skin. Oral minoxidil is used by some clinics but can affect blood pressure, swelling, heart rate, or other cardiovascular symptoms, so it requires careful medical judgment.

When to contact the clinic

Contact the clinic promptly if you notice chest pain, fainting, rapid heartbeat, swelling, severe dizziness, allergic symptoms, marked mood changes, or symptoms that worry you. Do not change prescription medication without medical advice.
