Why preparation helps
At a first consultation in Japan, the clinic typically explains the treatment, performs initial assessments, and outlines fees. If you do not ask questions in advance, important details about risks, cancellation rules, or follow-up requirements may not be volunteered. Preparing a list of questions in writing — and if possible in Japanese — helps ensure you leave the appointment with the information you need to make a decision.
Questions about the treatment
Ask: Is this treatment suitable for my specific condition based on the examination? What are the alternatives, and why is this one recommended for me? What are the known risks, side effects, and complications? How often do problems occur, and how are they handled? How long does recovery take, and what are the restrictions after treatment? What results should I realistically expect, and how long do they last?
Questions about costs
Ask: What is the total price, and what does it include? Are consultations, examinations, follow-up visits, medication, and consumables included? Is the price fixed, or might it change? When is the final price confirmed? What happens if I pay a deposit and am later found unsuitable? What is the cancellation and refund policy? Are there additional charges for complications or repeat procedures?
Questions about language support
Ask: Is English or Chinese support available today? Who provides interpretation — a trained staff member, a reception assistant, or a translation app? Is the same language support available for all follow-up visits, not just the first consultation? Can explanations of risk, consent forms, and post-treatment instructions be provided in my language? Is there an emergency contact line where I can communicate in my language?
Questions about follow-up and emergencies
Ask: How many follow-up visits are required, and what does each one check? Are follow-up visits included in the price, or charged separately? What symptoms should I watch for after treatment, and when should I contact the clinic urgently? What is the clinic's process for handling urgent complications outside normal hours? If I need care between appointments, who should I contact and how?
Signs of a thorough consultation
A clinic that explains contraindications, mentions alternatives, provides a written summary of costs, and encourages you to take time before deciding is generally more transparent than one that pressures you to decide the same day. It is reasonable to leave the first consultation without booking, review the information at home, and return if you decide to proceed. Any clinic that discourages asking questions or comparing options should be approached with caution.
