FUE and FUT hair transplant techniques in Japan
An overview of the differences between FUE and FUT, to help you prepare questions for a surgeon. Neither technique is universally better — suitability depends on individual factors and the surgeon's assessment.
About this article
This article outlines factual differences between two surgical techniques to help you prepare questions before a consultation. It does not represent a recommendation for either technique. Which is more suitable depends on your donor characteristics, hair loss pattern, and a surgeon's assessment.
Two main techniques
Hair transplant surgery mainly uses two harvesting methods: FUE (follicular unit extraction), where individual follicular units are extracted one by one from the donor area using small punches, and FUT (follicular unit transplantation), where a strip of scalp is surgically removed from the donor area and the follicular units are dissected from it. Both methods transfer living follicles to the recipient area, but they differ in scarring pattern, recovery time, and suitability depending on patient characteristics.
Key differences
FUE leaves small round scars scattered across the donor area that are less visible if hair is kept short. FUT leaves a linear scar along the back of the head that is hidden by longer hair but visible if the head is shaved. FUE generally has a shorter recovery and less post-operative discomfort. FUT can sometimes yield a larger number of grafts in a single session depending on technique. Neither is universally superior; suitability depends on individual donor characteristics, the area to be treated, and the surgeon's expertise.
MIRAI and proprietary techniques
Some Japanese clinics promote proprietary or branded techniques such as MIRAI, which is a refined FUE approach that aims to improve graft extraction and survival rates using specialized tools and protocols. When a clinic promotes a proprietary technique, ask for an explanation of what specifically differs from standard FUE and what evidence supports the claimed advantage.
What to ask a clinic
Ask which technique the surgeon recommends for your specific donor density, hair loss pattern, and coverage goal. Request an explanation of expected graft survival rate, scarring, recovery time, and follow-up schedule. If you need English or Chinese support, confirm it is available not only at consultation but also on the day of surgery and at follow-up appointments.
